Artist and professor of art at UC Santa Barbara, Kip Fulbeck traveled the country photographing over 1100 multiracial people of partial Asian/Pacific Islander descent.  These portraits are paired with each individual's handwritten response to the question "What are you?” creating a powerful composite of 21st century identity that alludes to issues of immigration and Diaspora.

In the FX reality TV show BLACK.WHITE. two families "trade races," and move into each others physical space to explore the meaning of racial identity, dynamics of racism, anti-racism, and the everyday experiences of a “racially- signified life" in Los Angeles.

Howard Winant, professor in the Sociology department at UC Santa Barbara and graduate student Michelle Samura were asked by FX to develop teaching materials using the show.  In this session, they will share clips and lead a discussion about these issues.

This coming academic year, California State University San Marcos will be opening a Cross Cultural Center!  The center will provide a lounge area for students to meet and relax, a multicultural library, a computer workstation with internet access, and student workspace.  In addition, the center will serve as a centralized location for the posting and dissemination of information on upcoming campus cultural events, community resources, and publications related to cross cultural and multicultural issues.
